The New Granada Theater

Friday, April 11th, 2008 by Roberta Hewson

The Granada Theater invited the general public to visit its newly restored, nearly 50 million dollar theatre last week on First Thursday. You must go to see it. The building’s restoration is unlike anything we have in Santa Barbara; made possible by so many wonderfully talented artists, architects, engineers, craftsmen, tradespersons, donors and passionate Santa Barbarans.

The outside of the theater looks also looks different - in an understated, 1920’s elegant way. My friend and I were filled with anticipation as we entered the theatre. There was such a buzz! Wine and cheese were being served in the lobby and many visitors were enjoying themselves.

There was so much to see (three floors) that we were overwhelmed. One of the docents mentioned we should be sure to look at the chandelier from the first floor of the theatre. It was a good focus to get us started. The original chandelier had been stored for a long time in a closed-off balcony. It was discovered during the renovation and subsequently restored to its original place of honor. It appeared to me as a magnificent piece of gold made into an enormous round shape, lighted and bejeweled. We were in awe of the beauty around us. You must go to see it yourself.

We were lucky to notice the Granada’s marketing director Vince Coronado speaking about the Granada’s restoration with some people and we tuned-in. He told us about another amazing feature of our newly renovated theater; a new 12,000+ square foot basement with state-of-the-art rehearsal space, dressing rooms and wardrobe storage. He said the performers say they don’t want to leave!

If you enjoy seeing beauty and art in architecture and design, treat yourself! The Granada has two more scheduled self-directed tours scheduled for First Thursdays on May 1st and June 5th from 5pm to 8pm. Mr. Coronado, docents and staff members will be available. If you would like to know more about the New Granada, visit them on the web at www.granadasb.org.

Enjoy the unique beauty of Santa Barbara! We are so fortunate to live here.
